Studio Niels is a boutique design studio founded by designer Niels Maier, located in the center of Maastricht, the Netherlands, with a clear focus on interiors, architecture and design.

The Neutral House

Capturing the studio’s ethos is their Neutral House, located in Amsterdam South and home to a young professional couple with two young kids and a busy lifestyle. In a city where Niels Maier says the overall design language leans towards bombastic, the designer has created interiors that beautifully reveal the exact opposite sentiment.

The home’s architecture was typical of the area with three levels. Across these levels, Niels has created space for a kitchen, kitchenette, cinema room, home office, guest bedroom and bathroom, master bedroom and ensuite, and two kids bedrooms connected to a ‘junior’ bathroom.

“We opened up all of the levels, adding a slim black extension with sliding doors to connect inside and outside. To create calm, we hid certain elements that you can literally open up if you want to use them; the tv cabinet is an example of this.”

What is particularly pertinent in Niels’ design work is the way gentle light interacts with each space, playing with the material palette. “The need for a soft, calm, pared down and natural atmosphere was key to the project,” he said.

Naturally, the designer selected materials based on a neutral palette, including bleached rough oak, soft greys, honed marble, white architectural finishes and concrete in the bathrooms and on the kitchen floor. “The steel glass doors were made in a soft grey tone to heighten the softness of the space,” he said.

Niels Maier designed this authentic monochromatic house. His works stands out for the usage of clean lines, opening up the space and adding lightness to architecture. The tailored interiors and objects are often based on a minimal and timeless approach with a focus on comfort. In his interiors he makes extensive use of rich, high-quality materials build by craftsmanship.

With harmoniously applied architectural interventions in the existing architecture, combined with minimalist placed luxurious living objects, which are executed in rich materials, there is a seamless connection with the existing context. The historical characteristics of the national monument have been accentuated and respected. The existing layout has been adapted where necessary to contemporary living needs, for example the bathroom ensuite and the living kitchen. The spaces are worked up by working with white, light and an open character.

The serenity has been achieved with the graphic design of the interior, which is combined with an architectural lighting plan, use of color by material, in which much attention has been paid to craftmanship. The materials used and their application to the unique living objects play an important part in the architectural interpretation. Materials that are often used in these residential objects are combined with contemporary materials and formed the basis for the elaboration to stimulate new generations; Oiled carrara marble combined with white HI-MACS.
