Carr Design rehearsed how people would move through and inhabit each space, to envision the delightful and deeply affecting environments. The project features handmade Spanish bricks, their six apartments set over a single level demonstrate a decidedly handcrafted take on design. Where tactile materials, clean lines and a warm, minimalist aesthetic pervade each space.

While the colour scheme and tones are soft and muted, the materiality is rich with texture, creating an elevated tactility through a combination of brushed and natural finishes.

835 High Street

835 High Street creates a new benchmark for medium density housing using core design principles, materiality and apartment planning. Carr Design considers those that will inhabit the space, which was the primary driver in the development of the design during the exploration stages. They ensure that architecture is not a human gesture by ‘the architect’ but rather one that takes cues from the surrounding context – materialising through scale, rhythm, colour or proportion.

The building’s architecture presents a rhythm in the streetscape, creating a sense of place and social awareness of good architecture and design. The palette is achromic with natural cement renders and stone, paired with soft grey window frames – bringing gentleness to the project. And critically that palette carries through to the interior.

This is a building that breathes. The pinnacle is the soaring 13-metre void in the centre, clearing a vertical pathway for the private residential lobby. As each level recesses, the building is punctuated by clear glazing offering sweeping views across Armadale over the city skyline.

In a natural fit to defer to the rich fabric of surrounding art, Moda has commissioned internationally renowned artist and sculptor Anna–Wili Highfield to create a stunning four-metre-high welcome swallow, which will perch high in the sky on the fa?ade, which Carr was integral in the selection of. This is coupled with a 12-metre-high feature piece ‘Bird’ that wraps elegantly into the interior lobby space. The outcome is a dynamic, animated void, created by dancing with light and shadow play.

Set in the highly sought-after suburb of Toorak, just a stone’s throw from Melbourne’s most prestigious schools and amenities . Carr Design's design takes into account background, form, materiality and thoughtful landscaping – these 12 finely crafted apartments push liveability and sophistication.

131 Residences

Comprised of four individual residences in one of Melbourne’s finest streets, 131 Residences shuns the superfluous, instead celebrating light and form. Robust and poetic, the development provides an environment that is intimately protected from the street and its neighbours, but benefits from expansive outlooks of the city and surrounding landscape.

Internally, generously-sized spaces flow one to another, barely reined in by their framed enclosures. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, with fine framing, allows the barrier between the interior and exterior spaces to virtually disappear. While this enhances the feeling of space, it also visually connects to nature from the garden, and in the ambient way sunlight is used to animate the interior spaces.
